Adolescence is a time of rapid growth and development in the young athlete. While strength training can lead to significant improvements in athletic performance, there are risk factors to consider before undergoing loaded or weighted activities. During the adolescent years, growth changes result in the rapid growth of bones and slower muscle growth. This can cause imbalances that may need special attention during a strength training program.

For best results, strength, power, and sports-specific skills should be layered on after control of basic body movements is achieved. Screening for these patterns and then making minor adjustments in the gym based on those results leads to a more effective training session.

The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and Y Balance Tests (YBT) are researched and validated screening tools utilized by physical therapists, athletic trainers, and strength coaches to determine the athlete's movement efficiency. The FMS is a series of seven movements designed to test an athlete's movement and control. It is graded on a scale of zero to three, with a score of three considered optimal. A score of zero indicates the presence of pain. Pain with movement is not normal or healthy and should be evaluated by a medical professional. The YBT evaluates for balance and motor control abilities under bodyweight loads. An experienced tester looks to uncover the weakest link or any significant asymmetry between the right and left sides. This information is then channeled into a specific exercise or activity designed to correct the deficiency, commonly referred to as a "corrective exercise." The goal is to make the athlete aware of these imbalances so corrective actions can be taken.

At Carle McLean County Orthopedics, all our therapists are certified in performing and interpreting the FMS and YBT tests. We use these for individual clients, team screenings, and return-to-play testing.

Each athlete receives individual and group results in comparison to other athletes of the same age and sport. These tests can be administered in the clinic or on-site.
